People have been using Botox to reduce wrinkles for nearly a quarter century now. The nonsurgical cosmetic procedure has proven so easy and effective, it’s become a multi-billion dollar industry. Since the opportunity to diminish wrinkles can be accomplished with a simple shot, more than five million people now receive Botox injections for wrinkles each year in the US alone.
Since the FDA officially approved Botox for cosmetic procedures back in 2002, doctors administering Botox treatments have become much more savvy at fine tuning results, and with each passing year, the benefits of Botox for wrinkles have become more pronounced, even as the wrinkles themselves become less so.
How Botox works
Botox is derived from the bacteria that causes botulism. When consumed in canned and preserved foods, the toxin paralyzes muscles by disrupting the nervous system, which may cause serious illness and even death. However, when administered by an experienced physician, Botox treatments are completely safe. Botox merely takes advantage of this effect of muscular paralyses by using small, controlled doses of purified toxin to block nerves in the face, thereby relaxing the fine muscles that cause wrinkles.
Botox for frown lines and forehead wrinkles
One of the more effective uses of Botox as a treatment for wrinkles is to reduce frown lines and other forehead wrinkles. Frown lines are the wrinkles that form between the eyebrows, on either side of the bridge of the nose when people frown and furrow their eyebrows. As we age, these lines become deeper and more pronounced as the skin begins to lose elasticity. Botox succeeds in relaxing the muscles that cause our foreheads to bunch.
Laugh lines and crow’s feet
Facial wrinkles are the result of a lifetime of habitual facial expressions. Just like frown lines result when we frown often, laugh lines and crow’s feet are the natural results of a happy life filled with smiles and laughter. A benefit of Botox for wrinkles may be reducing the appearance of lines that form between the nose and the corners of the mouth, and the crinkles appearing at the corners of the eyes while squinting with mirth.
Results improve over time
One benefit of Botox for wrinkles is that it’s not a permanent procedure — rather it’s something you may try, then, if you don’t like the results, stop. During initial Botox treatments, the muscles causing wrinkles will relax for up to three months at a time. However, the facial muscles affected will weaken over time, and if you continue to receive Botox treatments for a year or two, the results will begin to last as many as six months at a time.
Botox doesn’t merely reduce existing wrinkles, another benefit is the prevention of future wrinkles. By paralyzing and ultimately weakening the facial muscles known to cause wrinkles, the appearance of wrinkles may be put off many years through preventative treatment.
