3 Laser Treatments for Red Skin, Sun Spots, and Sun Damage

skin laser

As we age, exposure to sunlight, harsh climates, and general environmental stressors all take a toll on our skin. Eventually, these start to cause redness, mottled complexions, freckles, and sun spots. Medically, none of these are dangerous; however, they aren’t always aesthetically appealing and once the issue worsens, many people opt for facial skin treatments to reduce their appearance. Dr. Ghayouri offers a series of Laser Skin Treatment remedies in San Diego for sun spots, freckles, and other skin issues: limelight facials, Photo Genesis, and photodynamic therapy. These are cutting-edge skin laser treatments that specifically target red and brown discoloration. They are 100% safe, painless facial treatments for red skin and sun spots and will begin to reduce your skin discoloration after just one treatment.

What Are Sun Spots?

Sun spots on skin, called solar lentigines, are flat brown spots that show up on parts of your body that have been exposed to the sun. Once you start getting sun spots on your skin, expect them to darken and increase in number with every UV ray that hits your skin. Sunspots on skin are a focal increase of skin pigment called melanin; because of UV exposure, the pigment-making cells, called melanocytes, produced excess pigment in just one spot instead of uniformly across your skin surface. The important point is that there is no increase in the number of the melanocyte cells, just in the pigment that they produced.

Your first sunspots often show up on the sides of your face, the sides of your neck, the v of your chest, and the back of your hands. These are the areas of your skin that get the most lifetime sun exposure.

Red skin can be a result of many things, including a condition called rosacea which can be caused by sun exposure and genetics. If you notice that your skin is a redder shade than normal, set up a consultation with Dr. Ghayouri first to determine the underlying cause before you begin looking into treatment.

Are They Preventable?

Sun spots, freckles, and skin sun damage are all preventable. Always wear sunscreen, even when you aren’t spending a lot of time outside and think you won’t be needing it. Find a facial moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher; this makes it easy to combine your daily facial routine with sun damage prevention. Choose a light sunscreen for your arms and other parts of your body that may be exposed to the sun; this is the most surefire way to prevent sun damage and those ugly sun spots.

Facial Skin Treatments

Dr. Ghayouri offers a series of facial skin treatments to help treat sun damage, sun spots, freckles, and red skin.

  1. The LimeLight Facial: This is an IPL (intense pulsed light) skin care treatment that treats red skin, telangiectasia (tiny veins), and brown spots. Light brown spots, which were previously very difficult to resolve, respond very well to this particular treatment. And LimeLight can be used where you need it most – on the face, chest, arms and hands without gel or topical anesthetics. This is a noninvasive laser skin resurfacing option that causes little discomfort and zero pain.
  2. IPL PhotoGenesis: IPL Photo Genesis, alternatively known as photo-rejuvenation, involves a series of gentle treatments designed to rejuvenate aging and sun damaged skin utilizing light. These non-invasive, no down-time procedures improve redness, sunspots, fine lines, uneven tone and pore size to restore youthful skin to the face, neck, chest, and hands.
  3. Photodynamic Therapy: This treatment uses a specifically compounded chemical (aminolevulenic acid) that is attracted into highly active/damaged cells at a higher rate than healthy cells. The chemical is applied to the skin, then light is applied, activating the chemical that destroys the targeted cells. Photodynamic Therapy also generally rejuvenates the skin’s appearance, making it look more youthful and improving irregular pigmentation.

IPL is an easy skin treatment in Dr. Ghayouri’s San Diego office that comes with very little discomfort; when each pulse of light is delivered, you may feel a brief pinching sensation. This San Diego facial skin treatment is a quick way to improve red skin, mottled complexions, freckles, sun spots and skin sun damage, and an acne scar. A consultation with Dr. Ghayouri will help you determine if one of these treatments is right for you. Call her today at (858) 731–7601 to set up an appointment and take a step towards healthier skin.
